He is Professor of Social History and Director of the Institute for Social Movements at Ruhr-Uniersitaet Bochum in Germany. He is also executive chair of the Foundation History of the Ruhr and Honorary Professor at Cardiff University in the UK. He has published widely on the comparative history of the labour movement, on the British and German left, on deindustrialization and its impact as well as on historiography, historical theories, the history of nationalism and national identity and on memory history. His most recent monograph is: History and Identity: How Historical Theory Shapes Historical Practice, Cambridge University Press, 2022.
